Who is affected by unplanned pregnancy?

Crisis pregnancies happen to women of all ages, ethnicities, social and economic backgrounds, and when they occur the effect can be profound. According to the Alan Guttmacher Institute, here are several important characteristics of women who experience unplanned pregnancy:

• Unintended pregnancy accounts for nearly half of pregnancies in the United States annually.
  
• Over half of abortions which occur each year are performed on women in their 20s, and women aged 20-24 are most likely to have an abortion.
  
• The reasons cited most frequently in an abortion choice involve constraints such as responsibilities to others and resource limitations, such as financial difficulties and lack of partner support.
  

Women who are in college or just starting their professional lives are particularly vulnerable when faced with a crisis pregnancy.  Having already invested themselves substantially towards achieving educational or professional goals, these young women may choose abortion because they lack the practical support necessary to continue a crisis pregnancy and feel they simply have too much to lose.  For many college and working women, abortion may not be a free choice so much as the only choice they feel they can make.  It is specifically for these women that TNN exists, to give them the tools they need to be able to pursue motherhood and their own aspirations as well.
